“After the attack on October 7, there was a lot of anxiety around school security,” says Rabbi Baruch Rothman, Darchei Torah’s director of institutional advancement. “Parents worried about sending their children to school. We took some very visible and concrete steps to increase our security.” This alleviated the anxiety, but it came at a high financial cost.”

Shortly after moving to Queens from Portland, Oregon, to begin college, Dov Brodkin whose family now lives in Monmouth County, was walking away from a local store where he had stopped to pick up a box of donuts. Just then a homeless man appeared to ask for money, but Dov told the man all he was carrying was his debit card; Dov offered to share his donuts instead which the hungry man happily accepted. Following the encounter, he was struck by the look in the man’s eyes, “a mixture of deep, sincere gratitude and connection.”
Nine students have been named the 2024 undergraduate valedictorians at Yeshiva University, having been recognized for their remarkable academic achievements and overall excellence. Below are their bios, their experiences at YU and their plans for the future.
After sitting for over an hour with the father of First Sgt. Nitai Meisels, HY”D, who served in the elite tank unit Melech Ha’Arayot from October 7, 2023 until his tragic death on December 24, 2023, once again the portrait of a kadosh, a holy soul, emerges.
