On a perfect summer evening, more than 700 community members gathered in the open field beside Cunningham Park’s tennis courts, just off Union Turnpike and 196th Street, for an energetic, family-friendly concert. Hosted by the Queens Jewish Community Council (QJCC), the annual Summer Under the Stars celebration united Jews of all ages, backgrounds, and neighborhoods in an evening filled with ruach, music, and pride.

Back by popular demand after debuting at this event last year, Sephardic wedding scene legend Avi Perets—who proudly calls Queens home—delivered a brilliant, crowd-thrilling performance. With his signature blend of authentic Mizrachi melodies, timeless Jewish hits, and upbeat Hebrew favorites, Perets had the audience singing, clapping, and dancing deep into the night. Families joined hands in circles, children waved glow sticks high, and the energy in the park soared with every song.

Joining Perets was the phenomenal keyboardist Ouri Bitan, a staple of his band, alongside world-renowned violinist Eliya Siani and a master Israeli guitarist. Their passionate solos and dynamic harmonies elevated the music to new heights, creating an immersive, electrifying sound.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, light-up necklaces gleamed across the park, waved by children and adults alike. Hundreds of beach balls emblazoned with the Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center logo bounced through the air in rhythm with the music. Branded sunglasses flashed in every direction. These vibrant souvenirs were generously distributed at the Margaret Tietz tent, where Linda Spiegel (Director of Public Affairs), Mazal Fuzailov, OTR/L (Rehab Director), and Chopsie Zylberminc (of the Administrator’s office) warmly greeted attendees.

The crowd was a beautiful reflection of the diverse fabric of the Queens Jewish community. Ashkenazi and Sephardic families, Israeli immigrants, senior citizens, young couples, and children of all ages stood side by side, united in song and celebration. Attendees came from surrounding neighborhoods like Hillcrest, Fresh Meadows, Jamaica Estates, and Holliswood, as well as from Kew Gardens, Rego Park, Forest Hills, Briarwood, and beyond.

A special shout-out goes to New York State Assembly Member Sam Berger, who joined the event and showed his support for the vibrant Jewish presence in Queens.

Security and peace of mind were ensured by the dedicated presence of Queens Shmira volunteers, the NYPD, and Community Security Service (CSS) members, who remained stationed throughout the evening to protect and support the community.

This remarkable night - lit by the stars above and the shining faces of attendees - was a powerful reminder of the strength, unity, and simchah that define the Queens Jewish community.
