On Sunday afternoon, August 17, Zucker Jewish Academy of Queens (ZJA) opened its doors to families from across the borough for a lively Family Fun Day. From noon to 3 p.m., the campus filled with laughter, music, and the simple joy of neighbors coming together.

Kids ran from booth to booth, trying their luck at carnival games and walking away with small prizes that made their eyes light up. They crowded around a family-friendly show, clapping and laughing along. The line at Rita’s Italian Ice truck stretched long, but nobody minded; children and parents happily waited for the chance to enjoy something cold and sweet on a warm afternoon. Families then sat down to share a full dairy lunch, a meal that gave everyone the chance to relax and talk together. By the time raffles were drawn and ZJA-branded gifts handed out, every child left with something in hand and a memory worth keeping.

For parents, the day was about more than just fun. It was a chance to meet one another and to speak with the school’s staff in a welcoming setting. Greeting families with his trademark warmth was Rabbi Yitzchok Wurem, Head of School, a veteran educator with more than 25 years of experience. Parents appreciated the way he took the time to listen and share his vision of raising confident, connected Jewish children grounded in Torah values. Alongside him was Mrs. Celia Abtan, Principal and Preschool Director, who brings over three decades of experience and is beloved for her personal care and dedication. Parents noted how her sincerity and enthusiasm made them feel instantly at home.

Behind the games and the treats was a larger purpose: to show families what a strong and nurturing Jewish education can mean for their children. The sound of kids laughing, the sight of parents in conversation, and the presence of caring educators showed that this was a community invested in its future. As one mother said with a smile, “It was so beautiful to see my kids having the time of their lives while we thought seriously about what Jewish education could mean for them.”

The Zucker Jewish Academy of Queens continues to be a place where families are welcomed and children are inspired. Events like this Family Fun Day remind us that Jewish life in Queens is vibrant and full of possibility.

At its heart, ZJA is more than just a school—it’s a safe place for children to grow and thrive. Faculty and students alike enjoy an open, respectful environment where everyone feels valued. A spirit of kindness and responsibility is woven into daily life, and students are proud to belong to the Zucker Jewish Academy family. With newly renovated classrooms, beautiful grounds, and the reassurance of full-time security, children are able to focus on learning and personal growth in a space that feels like a second home.
