Over 50 Emet students and staff gathered this past weekend for an unforgettable Shabbaton in Passaic, New Jersey. The experience was organized for students in Emet’s Fresh Meadows Fellowship, an introductory program that meets Monday evenings and welcomes participants from multiple local campuses, including Queens College, St. John’s University, Adelphi University, Baruch College, New York Institute of Technology, and others. As the first Shabbaton of the semester, there was a mix of spirituality, friendship, and personal growth that left everyone deeply inspired.
The feeling of solidarity started on Erev Shabbos when students met at the Emet office for pizza and bonded on the bus ride to Passaic. After settling in at their host families, Kabbalas Shabbos and dinner were held at Tifereth Israel. Students were joined by a devoted Emet team and their families, including Rabbi Reuven Kigel, Campus Director; Sara Benyamin, Program Director; and Campus Mekarvim Rabbi Yakov Musheyev, Alexandra Zarka, and Jenny Scharg. There was a sense of connection when all the students had a chance to introduce themselves and share what they were most looking forward to this semester in the fellowship. Many spoke genuinely about wanting to grow in their connection to Hashem, learn more about Judaism, and meet new friends. “It was really beautiful hearing so many students speak so genuinely,” Alexandra Zarka shared. “The atmosphere was positive, open, and filled with inspiration.” The evening continued with a lively oneg featuring games, singing, and laughter.
Shabbos day brought more opportunities for connection. Students enjoyed meals and meaningful conversations with their host families, many of whom remarked on how uplifting it was to share Shabbos with young adults eager to learn and grow. Later in the afternoon, the girls gathered at the home of Rebbetzin Devorah Kigel for an intimate shiur, Q&A session, and Seudah Sh’lishis. The discussion focused on dating, self-worth, and dignity – themes from Rebbetzin Kigel’s talks and book. “Mrs. Kigel was so welcoming and gave us such amazing dating advice,” said student Michelle Ilyayev. “We also took turns sharing our experience of the Shabbaton. It truly felt like a sisterhood.” Meanwhile, the guys learned with Rabbi Kigel and enjoyed their own Seudah Sh’lishis and discussion at a parallel program.
The weekend concluded with a powerful musical Havdalah at the Kigel home, where dancing filled the room with simchah. “Our fellowship has grown so much that we can’t even fit everyone in our living room anymore for Friday night dinner – and that’s a wonderful problem to have,” said Rabbi Kigel. “For many students, it was their first time keeping Shabbos, and it was deeply inspiring not only for them but for all of us.”
Student Samuel Ilyajanov shared, “The Shabbaton was a beautiful experience. I didn’t think about my phone or TV or studying. I was too busy connecting with friends, speaking with the rabbis, and understanding the meaning of Shabbos. I’m grateful I chose to give that day to Hashem. The feeling I got is something I’ll cherish and hope to experience again.”
As students returned home, their smiles reflected the beauty of Shabbos, the joy of community, and the lasting bonds formed through Emet.
