After a very successful In-Service Day held for the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls’ faculty and administration in August, Dr. Deborah Gilboa, a noted physician and youth development expert, returned to speak to the entire parent community of HALB – Lev Chana, HALB Elementary, SKA, and DRS – on Wednesday, December 11. Dr. Gilboa’s talk focused on “Rigor and Resilience: Strategies for Strengthening our Children Toward Success,” and the enthusiastic audience found her stories relatable and her suggestions thought-provoking.

As we gear up for Chanukah, the student body at Bnos Malka Academy prepares letters of encouragement to the Jewish soldiers at Fort Benning in Georgia. The small “care packages,” assembled by the 8^th grade class, have lots of delicious Chanukah treats and even small dreidels. (Imagine grown men in uniform sitting on the floor spinning a dreidel.) Perhaps the sweetest part of the gift is the personal letters written by the second graders to the soldiers.

It’s all in Hashem’s hands.

Nevertheless, modern-day educators have a responsibility to teach their students how to succeed in the real world. As a result, Yeshiva Tiferes Moshe incorporates financial literacy into its Grade 8 curriculum. The yeshiva hosts Mr. Yaacov Granek, an instructor with over forty years of experience in the field of finance, enabling its students to enter adulthood with a broader knowledge of economics and financial discipline.

It is an important Central tradition for each grade to embark on a couple of chesed missions throughout the year. The freshmen had their first taste of this last week, when the grade split up into groups to help out the needy in various places. Some went to Yachad Gift to help special needs employees package gift baskets for Chanukah, and others did similar work at the Met Council.

SKA attendees to this year’s NCSY JUMP (Jewish Unity Mentoring Program) Conference – Rachel Bodek, Kelly Friedman, Kayla Frenkel, Avigail Goldberg, Atara Greenfield, Sarah Leiderman, Hannah Lifschutz, Riki Posner, Ayelet Rosman, and Arielle Yarmish – had an exciting few days of training on Sunday, November 10, through Tuesday, November 12, in Connecticut.

Bais Yaakov Academy of Queens Kindergarten had a wonderful time at their “Mommy and Me” workshop on Thanksgiving Day. Excitement was in the air as mothers and grandmothers visited BYQ.
