Do you recall that cute rhyme from a famous children’s movie, “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” Well, readers, as we head into the cold, wet, snowy weather, my clients sing that rhyme as, “Water, water everywhere, my carpets stink everywhere!” Okay, that’s a little lame, but you get the idea.

Yeshiva University is excited to announce the appointment of Rabbi Ari Rockoff as the David Mitzner Community Dean for Values and Leadership. Rockoff will work to develop and strengthen the University’s mission through the Office of Values and Leadership.
Center Fills Void for English-speakers Amid Mental Health Pressures Such as Covid
Filling a critical need for affordable, English-language mental health services in Israel, Yeshiva University (YU), together with Amudim Israel, opened the Jerusalem Therapy Center in late October. Providing professional care for English speakers, gap-year students and Israelis, the Center is located at 3 Strauss Street in Jerusalem and offers mental health counseling that has become ever more important during prolonged lock downs and affiliated stresses caused by the Covid 19 pandemic and other factors.

Two men were arrested in connection with online threats to attack a New York City synagogue. Investigators from the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force and the NYPD Counterterrorism and Intelligence Bureau, in collaboration with law enforcement partners, uncovered what they called “a developing threat to the Jewish community,” and authorities “moved swiftly to gather information, identify those behind it, and operationally neutralize their ability to do harm,” according to Commissioner Keechant Sewell. The suspects allegedly had a firearm, a high-capacity magazine, ammunition, an 8-inch-long military-style knife, a swastika arm patch, a ski mask, and a bulletproof vest when they were arrested. “This was not an idle threat. This was a real threat,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference. “It is my duty to protect Jewish New Yorkers from antisemitism.”

Like many other clinical terms, such as depressed, anxious, or bipolar, the term “abused” is often used out of context. Saying “You’re so abusive” can mean “I feel mistreated or disrespected” or “I’m just not being treated nicely.” In truth though, abuse in marriages is a real issue in the Jewish world, just as it is in any other population around the world. We need to familiarize ourselves with it to protect and help ourselves, our children and our community from both the abuse itself and the effect it has on those around its victims.
