 A man driving a U-Haul truck went on a violent spree in Brooklyn, hitting nine people and killing one. The driver careened through Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, striking people on sidewalks and bicycles. Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the incident as a “rampage.” The police have not yet named the driver publicly, but three law enforcement officials confirmed that his name iscWeng Sor, a man in his early 60s who has had previous encounters with the police and was noted to be “emotionally disturbed.” Investigators believe he may have been living in the U-Haul truck for the past month. The man was initially stopped by police after hitting one person, but he fled in the truck and hit more people before being caught several miles away. Seven men and a police officer were hospitalized with injuries, while the man who died has not yet been identified.

 A 19-year-old from West Hempstead was tragically killed in a car accident in Jerusalem. Adira Koffsky was hit by a car whose driver lost control in a rainstorm. A 2022 graduate of Yeshiva University Girls High School, Koffsky was studying in seminary Midreshet Amudim, located just a few blocks from the accident site.  Adira went to Hebrew Academy of Nassau County until 8th grade.  “The entire Amudim family is shattered, our hearts are broken and we are in shock and pain over the loss of our beloved student,” the seminary wrote in a statement. “All words of wisdom or comfort are empty at this moment.”

 Sayfullo Saipov, the terrorist who killed eight people in 2017 by driving a truck down the Hudson River bike path, was convicted of murder charges by a federal jury. The attack, the deadliest terrorist attack in NYC since 9/11, could come with the death penalty.  The 34-year-old Uzbek native said after his arrest that he was inspired to carry out the attack by Islamic State videos he watched on his phone, and that he chose a truck to inflict maximum damage against civilians. If Saipov is given the death penalty for his crimes, he will be the first to receive the sentence during the Biden administration.  Biden campaigned against capital punishment. Saipov was found guilty of all 28 counts he faced. They included eight counts of murder in aid of racketeering activity — one for each victim killed — and one count of violence and destruction of a motor vehicle causing death. Those all carry a maximum sentence of death or life imprisonment. He was also convicted of one count of providing material support to a terrorist organization, ISIS, which carries a maximum life sentence, and 18 attempted murder counts.
