Morton Povman, who passed away last week at 93, was the longest-serving member in the history of the New York City Council. More significantly, he was, in the words of former City Council Member and Chair of the One Israel Fund Steve Orlow, “a steadfast supporter of the Kew Gardens Hills Jewish community who always showed up when we needed him.”

This weekend marked a significant moment of unity and service as members of Mayor Eric Adams’ Jewish Advisory Council gathered at the historic Congregation Orach Chaim for Masbia’s annual Chop ’n Pack event. The event, under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Benjamin Skydell, the venerable Rabbi of Orach Chaim, and Rabbi Alexander Rapaport, the dynamic ED of Masbia, saw a diverse turnout from across the City’s Jewish community and beyond, all converging to support Masbia’s noble cause of addressing food insecurity in New York City.

The Simchas Torah massacre in Eretz Yisrael pierced the heart of every single Jew no matter their religious affiliation. The attack forced us all to look at life differently. Moreover, it required that we each take upon ourselves acts of kindness and charity for those affected. Many of us participated in local collection drives and opened our pockets to support Israeli charities in ways we have never done before. Others traveled to Israel and gave their time to aid in the relief efforts underway for those displaced and for the devoted service members. These efforts were all necessary. However, at the same time, our local charities suffered tremendously.
