The students of IVDU LI have been privileged to host a weekly karate class with Master Eli Chaikin of Pakua Long Island for the past year and a half. Master Eli has been teaching the students not only how to punch and kick, but about the need for self-discipline, in order to achieve greater goals both in karate and in their day-to-day lives.
The eighth grade at the Bnos Malka Academy has embarked on a meaningful and inspirational journey this year. The students are working with Names, Not Numbers©: an interactive, multi-media Holocaust project created by educator Tova Fish-Rosenberg. During the course of the year, the students will learn the skills to interview, video, and create a documentary detailing the life of a Holocaust survivior. The Names, Not Numbers Program is generously supported by a prominent national foundation.
The Grade Four Girls’ Melaveh Malkah held at the Yeshiva of Central Queens (YCQ) on Motza’ei Shabbos, January 8, was a marvelous event! The girls were accompanied by their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters, to enjoy a night full of creative projects, beautiful performances, a meaningful shiur presented by guest speaker Mrs. Amit Yaghoubi, and a delicious dairy dinner.
MTA Freshmen put both their English and creativity skills to work and designed innovative projects for their end-of-semester English Literature assessment on Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey.” The talmidim created board games, brochures, websites, and presentations to advertise a travel adventure, as well as movie posters, storyboards, and trailers for imagined film adaptations and digital retellings of the epic.
Students at Lev Chana celebrated Tu BiSh’vat by making trees and having a special Tu BiSh’vat seder!
Morah Frumit Fruchtzweig has brought in a new reading program, Reading Done Right, to IVDU LI this year. This program promotes phonemic awareness, breaking words into syllables, rhyming, and focusing on identifying initial and final sounds. These skills are all the necessary pre-reading skills that children need before they can successfully learn how to read. Students who have not been able to master these skills with other programs have been very successful.
