B’Siyata D’Shmaya (With G-d’s Help)
One of the great Rebbes of Israel, about whom hundreds of wondrous stories are told.
The residents of Queens are already filled with excitement; the Rebbe is coming again. More than a year has passed since the last visit of the Rebbe, and hundreds of people are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to meet the revered Rebbe once again. For many years, the Rebbe has been coming to the area, and every year the same thing happens: upon the Rebbe’s arrival at the residence of his host, the place transforms into a massive attraction. Hundreds of people from all walks of life—lawyers, doctors, real estate professionals, rabbis, and educators; Chassidim and Modern Orthodox—are seen flocking to the house from the early morning hours until the middle of the night. On the lips of many are incredible stories of miracles and salvations, far beyond the natural order, which they merited, with Divine assistance, through the power of the Rebbe shlita’s blessing.
Everyone wants to understand: What draws thousands of people of all types and backgrounds to come time and again to see the Biala Rebbe? What causes people who do not appear to be Chassidim at all to connect with the Rebbe in every aspect of their lives? Why is the first phone call, whether in times of joy or, G-d forbid, sorrow, made to the Rebbe’s offices in Israel? What explains the magnificent sight of Klal Yisrael—people well over the age of seventy alongside young men, community rabbis, and senior politicians from both the American and Israeli governments—seen wherever the Rebbe goes, whether in California and Florida, or in New York and New Jersey?
66 and Another 60
It is Purim in Yerushalayim. Hundreds of people stream to participate in the tish that the Biala Rebbe is conducting in his beis medrash in Yerushalayim. The orchestra plays, the crowd is exultant with joy, and hundreds of people in need of salvation are standing in line to receive a blessing from the Rebbe. Suddenly, the Rebbe calls out to Rabbi M.R. and begins to dance with him. Rabbi M.R. has four children of marriageable age, and nothing has been moving forward. The Rebbe announces in a loud voice, “Rabbi M.R. will now commit to distribute 60 packages to widows and orphans for the upcoming Pesach holiday.” Rabbi M.R. agrees immediately, and the Rebbe brings him up to dance on the stage. A few minutes pass, and the Rebbe announces, “S.Y. commits to giving 66 packages to orphans and widows for the upcoming Pesach.” S.Y. happily commits and also joins the dance.
Exactly 60 days after Purim, a plate was broken—M.R.’s son became engaged. Sixty-six days passed, and S.Y.’s daughter also became engaged… all through the power of the Rebbe’s blessing.
The Prosecutor Will Become Your Defender
“Holy Rebbe, save us!!” Sobs and wails are heard over the phone in the Rebbe’s room. Yudi, a dear man from the western United States, was arrested in the middle of the night by armed police officers, and the prosecution was seeking a long prison sentence. The family called the Rebbe’s office in Bnei Brak and told the terrifying story. The prosecution was asking for many years of imprisonment for state law violations in the business run by the family’s father. The Rebbe calmed the family and listened to all the details of the case. He guided the family to accept upon themselves good spiritual resolutions, strengthened them, and blessed them that they would see the salvation of G-d in a supernatural way. The father was released on bail and came to meet the Rebbe. The Rebbe strengthened him and said, “You are going to hold a seudas hodaya (meal of thanksgiving to Hashem) at the Biala Yeshivah in Israel. You will see that the prosecutor will become your defender!”
The day of the trial arrived. The entire family was under immense stress. They called the Rebbe again, and the Rebbe reassured them, “You will see the salvation of G-d in the merit of your good resolutions. You will see miracles, and I will participate in the thanksgiving meal at the Biala Yeshivah in Israel.”
And the unbelievable miracle occurred. During the trial, the prosecutor turned to the judge and said, “After reviewing the defendant’s file, I recommend that the court drop the charges against him. He is an honorable man and has been punished enough by his initial arrest…” The first phone call from the courthouse was to the Rebbe’s gabbai. “Holy Rebbe, the miracle happened! I’m free!”
“The Doctors Are Wrong!! You Will Have Many Children”
A couple from Great Neck, N.Y., came to the Rebbe with worry etched on their faces. The wife, married for five years, was in the early stages of a pregnancy but was terrified. Four previous pregnancies had ended in miscarriage, R”L (G-d forbid). The doctors said she had no chance of having children and suggested they consider adoption. The Rebbe read their note and told them decisively, “B’EH (with G-d’s help), the baby will be born healthy and whole.” The Rebbe instructed them to take upon themselves good resolutions in mitzvos and good deeds, promising that he himself would participate as the sandek at the bris of their healthy child, B’EH. One who did not experience the excitement at the bris, which took place in the Rebbe’s presence, and the sheer joy, could not possibly describe it.
The Secret of the Wedding
A Jewish wedding in one of New York’s most magnificent halls. The best musicians are playing wedding songs when suddenly the father of the bride stands up and, with great emotion, invites the guest of honor from Israel, the Biala Rebbe, who came specially from Bnei Brak for the wedding. “It’s all thanks to the Rebbe,” says the father of the groom, with tears in his eyes.
Only two years had passed since a worried couple had entered the Biala Rebbe’s room, their eyes filled with tears. Their son had met a non-Jewish woman at work, and their relationship had become more and more serious. The parents were crying, hoping for salvation. The Biala Rebbe sat with them, dedicating days and nights to strengthening their son and the entire family, offering segulos (spiritual remedies), blessings, and good resolutions. The Rebbe accompanied the family, and the miracle happened… Today, as their son marries a girl from a respected family in the community, the emotional father declares, “It is all in the merit of the Biala Rebbe.”
Similar stories are heard from many. Young people for whom the Rebbe finalized their shidduch. Young couples who had difficulties with shalom bayis whom the Rebbe guided onto the right path, turning their house into a happy home. All these stories mingle with those of businessmen who recount that since receiving the Rebbe’s blessing, their businesses began to flourish beyond the natural order. People who were blessed with children after many years of waiting. People who were harassed by the legal authorities and couldn’t sleep at night from fear, who received the Rebbe’s blessing and suddenly everything was resolved miraculously. These stories and many more are just a small fraction of what happens daily among those who merit the Rebbe’s blessing. Therefore, it is no wonder to see the hundreds of people who besiege the door of the Rebbe’s host, seeking his counsel and blessing.
“The Rebbe Saved Me from Bankruptcy”
A well-known businessman is also seen waiting to meet the Rebbe. He recounts:
“I met the Biala Rebbe by mistake… I was invited to a melaveh malka that the Rebbe was holding in my neighborhood. The week I met the Rebbe was the worst of my life. The following week, it seemed that my entire fortune, which I had worked for decades to build, was about to be lost. I couldn’t sleep at night. I saw no way out of the mess. I didn’t know what would happen to me and my family.
I saw the Rebbe the next Shabbos at the tish. During the Kiddush, the Rebbe spoke about faith in G-d and how a Jew never gives up, that a Jew is above nature. I felt the Rebbe was speaking directly to me, to my soul. After Shabbos, I went in to receive a blessing from the Rebbe. The Rebbe, who did not study business at MIT, instructed me to establish a fixed daily Torah study session and to be meticulous in honoring my wife. The Rebbe instructed me to go to the bank’s management myself, without a lawyer or anyone else. The Rebbe gave me several spiritual actions to perform before the meeting. He guided me by phone and encouraged me during those difficult days. To this day, I have no explanation for how it happened, but here I am. My house was not foreclosed, my business is flourishing and successful, with Divine assistance. All this is through the blessing of the holy Biala Rebbe.”
The Rebbe Shlita
A young man in his early thirties, the Rebbe was chosen to lead upon the sudden passing of his father, the previous Rebbe zt”l. Already in his youth, the Rebbe shlita was selected by his father to serve as the head of the Biala Yeshivah. Shocked and broken by the great loss, the followers of the late Rebbe zt”l united and crowned the Rebbe shlita to fill his holy father’s place and continue the sacred dynasty that extends back to the days of the holy Baal Shem Tov.
A Turning Point in the Leadership of the Chassidus
The Rebbe was a young man when he began to lead the community of Biala Chassidim of Bnei Brak, but his greatness and leadership quickly broke through the boundaries of the Chassidus. The Rebbe shlita chose to break down barriers and go out to his brethren. The Rebbe shlita, who leads a most respected Chassidic group in Israel with its center in Bnei Brak and branches in Yerushalayim, Beitar Illit, Ashdod, Beit Shemesh, and Modi’in Illit, added a new/old dimension to the leadership of Biala Chassidus.
Every single day, in the waiting room outside the Rebbe’s chamber, dozens of Jews of all types are seen—Ashkenazim and Sephardim, Charedim and those for whom a kippah was placed on their head only minutes before, from Holon and Bat Yam, from Be’er Sheva and Eilat. Everyone knows the address. The Rebbe has opened his door and his heart to all of Klal Yisrael.
Every single day, the Rebbe dedicates many hours for the sake of the Jewish people. His compassionate heart, his captivating smile, and the merit of his holy ancestors serve as a magnet for thousands of Jews who pour out their hearts before him, arriving at his room with bundles of troubles and worries, and departing with the relief of a heavy stone having been lifted from their hearts.
The holy dynasty of Biala Chassidus extends back over two hundred years, beginning with the holy Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak of Pshischa, known as the “Holy Jew” of Pshischa, a student of the “Seer of Lublin” and a fourth-generation descendant of the holy Baal Shem Tov. He was the greatest of the Rebbes of Poland and the teacher of thousands of Chassidim, with the great Rebbes of Gur, Kotzk, Alexander, and others counted among his disciples. Generation after generation of righteous men continued the legacy of the Holy Jew of Pshischa, son after son, down to our generation’s holy Rebbe, Rabbi Yechiel Yehoshua of Biala zt”l, the grandfather of the current Rebbe shlita, who was a fifth-generation direct descendant of the Holy Jew.
The Chelkas Yehoshua
The Rebbe shlita’s grandfather, the holy Admor Rabbi Yechiel Yehoshua ztz”l, was already known in Poland as one of the great Rebbes, but he achieved the peak of his fame during the terrible Holocaust, sanctifying G-d’s name in occupied Poland and later in Siberia through divine service with indescribable self-sacrifice. Afterward, in the Land of Israel, he became known as one of the greatest tzaddikim, with all the great Rebbes admiring him and treating him as an angel not of this world.
The Lehavas Dovid
His son and successor, the father of the current Rebbe shlita, was Rebbe Dovid Matisyahu ztz”l, a radiant personality who became famous for his greatness and holiness even in his youth. During his father’s lifetime, he was appointed head of the Biala Yeshiva. His travels throughout the world stirred broken hearts, his prayers and sermons drew people from afar, and his form and towering stature were the very image of his holy father.
The Rebbe shlita continues this holy dynasty, and his community of followers continues to grow. Yet he is not content with leading just his community; the Rebbe cares for all of Klal Yisrael. The Rebbe, who is the biological father of 15 children, may they increase, leaves his home several times a year to meet with all Jews. In places where a Chassidic Rebbe has never set foot, the Rebbe spends his Shabbos. He brings distant Jews closer, encourages, strengthens, guides, and directs. And so, another Jew finds his Father in Heaven.
Every year during his annual visit to California, a man comes to the Rebbe with a bag of tefillin. “Rebbe, here are my tefillin.” This man was born to a family that contented itself with biannual visits to a Reform temple, R”L. Through the influence of the Rebbe shlita, he began to put on tefillin every single day. And so, every year he comes to the Rebbe and announces, “Here are the tefillin.”
This is how the Rebbe operates, in the path of the great tzaddikim of past generations, the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov who wandered from town to town to bring Klal Yisrael closer. Another Jew and another Jew comes to the Rebbe, each with his own story. The Rebbe elevates each one of them by one degree. The Rebbe sees in every Jew his holy soul, and from each one, he requests one good resolution. The thousands of Jews who have been uplifted in the Rebbe’s merit are the ones who give power to the tzaddik’s blessings to be fulfilled. This is how it appears wherever the Rebbe goes—more and more Jews await to see him and to merit the blessing of this tzaddik.
The Rebbe’s Institutions
The Rebbe’s institutions are well-known and famous in Israel, but the crown jewel to which the Rebbe dedicates his heart is the care for orphans. The Rebbe has neither day nor night. He has 15 biological children (bli ayin hara) and dozens of grandchildren, but hundreds of children throughout the world feel that the Rebbe is their father. Among the holy institutions under the Rebbe’s presidency is the Yeshiva Gedola “Iyun HaTorah Biala” in Bnei Brak and Beitar Illit, Batei Midrash for Biala Chassidim, and Kollelim for married scholars in Bnei Brak, Jerusalem, Beitar Illit, Modi’in Illit, and Beit Shemesh.
The flagship of the Rebbe’s institutions is the “Orphans and Widows Fund,” which is under the Rebbe’s personal supervision. This special fund cares for the orphans studying in the Rebbe’s institutions. These unfortunate children receive the very best, from clothing and footwear to a warm home in the yeshiva dormitory and, of course, pocket money. But the highlight is the adoption they receive from the Rebbe, who embraces them as his own sons. His home is their home, and their worries are his worries. The Rebbe follows their studies and arranges personal tutors for them. Before every holiday, the Rebbe personally sees to it that they receive new clothes. So much so that before Pesach, upon returning to Israel from a trip to the USA, immediately upon leaving the airport, the Rebbe instructed his driver to go visit the orphans, instead of going to see his own children and family. Only after the Rebbe arrived, met with each orphan, and gave him pocket money for clothing and holiday gifts did he consent to return to his own home.
Impressive Development in the Biala Institutions in Israel
The special institution for the Rebbe’s “children” has for years been housed in an old building in the city of Beitar Illit, near Jerusalem. The building, located right on the edge of the city, overlooks the Arab village of “Husan,” whose Arab residents watch daily with forlorn eyes as the city of Torah grows before them. The city of Beitar, located in the “disputed territories,” has a dilapidated building where the students live, where rain leaks in during the winter and the heat is unbearable in the summer. This year, the Rebbe decided, “No more.” These special children deserve a more fitting building. A new campus on Kedushas Levi Street in Beitar Illit is now in a flurry of construction. The campus will include classrooms, computer and recreation rooms for the students’ welfare, a fully-equipped dormitory, and a modern kitchen for the well-being of the students for whom this is their personal home.
This is in addition to the Chesed (Charity) Center inaugurated on Rechov HaRav Shach. The Rebbe’s charitable activities are famous. The Rebbe is the address for widows and orphans in need of help. Trucks loaded with all manner of goods depart every holiday eve to the homes of the needy, providing them with everything good: clothing, apparel, shoes, meat and fish, sweets, and of course, a respectable check to bring joy to the needy. More than once, the Rebbe has been seen dancing at the wedding of an orphan boy and an orphan girl, for both of whom the Rebbe has served as a “father” since they were orphaned at a young age.
Around the Clock
When the day ends in New York, the phone begins to buzz from Israel. On the line are Jews from Israel who need the Rebbe’s blessing and advice. And when the Rebbe is in Israel, the calls come from Los Angeles and New York, from Miami and New Jersey, because they are all his children. Hundreds of emails arrive at the Rebbe’s secretariat. Every day, the Rebbe dedicates an hour of his time to all the questions that come to him from the ends of the earth, praying for all of them in his Beis Medrash, at holy sites, and at the gravesites of his holy ancestors, for he carries the burden of the entire nation upon himself. In their sorrow, he is afflicted, and in their joy, his heart rejoices. Seven gabbaim (attendants) work around the clock to answer the questions of the thousands who call to receive the Rebbe’s blessing. The great wonder is that the Rebbe remembers every single person he has met, and their greatest satisfaction is to tell the Rebbe good news about another miracle that occurred, another child who was born, or another couple who got engaged from his holy blessing.
Education and Shalom Bayis (Domestic Harmony)
Among the Rebbe’s many virtues, many note his deep understanding in all areas of life. Parents from all over the country come to consult with him on matters of education. More than once, the Rebbe gives a surprising answer to the parents, and this answer becomes the key to a 360-degree change in the entire conduct of their home. Suddenly, a house that was full of quarrels becomes the happiest of homes. Hundreds of cases of shalom bayis problems have been solved through the wise counsel of the Rebbe, who dedicates hours upon hours to bringing peace to Jewish homes, where many families that seemed to have no choice but to separate have, thanks to the Rebbe, seen the Divine Presence and peace return to their homes.
Engagement at Three in the Morning
The Rebbe has a special “hobby”: to establish more and more faithful homes in Israel. Among the thousands who visit the Rebbe are many who have not yet found their match—older single men and, of course, women in the same situation, parents of older children, etc. The Rebbe, beyond his advice and blessings, also strives to personally bring people together and assist, so that many weddings have come about with the Rebbe’s help. In a few weeks, a young couple, an orphan boy and an orphan girl from Long Island, will celebrate their wedding. Only the couple knows the secret: if not for the Biala Rebbe, it would not have happened. Only thanks to the Rebbe’s encouragement, support, and “push” did the miracle occur. Hours upon hours the Rebbe dedicated to them, both together and individually. And at 3:00 in the morning, another plate was broken, and another Jewish home is about to be built, thanks to the Rebbe.
The Rebbe Knows Everything
A couple sits in the Rebbe’s room. On their request form, they write their names and the names of their children. They ask for a blessing for one of their sons who is having difficulties in school and a blessing for one of their businesses that needs a blessing. The Rebbe shlita looks at the note where their names are written and says to the husband, “You must go out for a walk with your wife once a week. If you honor your wife, all your problems will be solved.” The wife burst into tears. The Rebbe, whom they were seeing for the first time, knew everything about them. The Rebbe forgets about the dozens of people waiting outside. He dedicates over an hour to them, explaining the great virtue of shalom bayis. He gives them detailed instructions on how to bring their hearts closer to each other, saying, “The key to success in business and the key to nachas (pride and joy) from the children is the respect between the parents.” And so, another couple leaves the Rebbe’s room with a smile, and the wife writes to the Rebbe’s secretariat some time later, “The Rebbe saved our marriage.”
