Emet kicked off the summer with an unforgettable Shabbaton in Passaic, as a group of dedicated jHealth students from Queens College and Adelphi University joined staff for a memorable Shabbos experience. They were welcomed by Emet’s Campus Director Rabbi Reuven Kigel and his wife Devorah, who have been sharing the beauty of Shabbos with Emet students for over 18 years. “The summer Shabbatons are always my favorite, since they are not centered around a mandatory Fellowship program, but participants come simply because they want to experience a Shabbos with us in Passaic. It’s totally lishmah, and as a result, there is always tremendous growth for all those involved – students and staff alike,” Rabbi Kigel said.
The weekend began with pizza and transportation from the Emet office, followed by candle lighting and a beautiful Friday night dinner at the Kigel home. From the start, the atmosphere was electric. With singing, heartfelt conversations, and genuine warmth, the night was filled with meaningful moments and personal growth. Students connected deeply – with each other, with the staff, and with the spirit of Shabbos itself.
Alexandra Zarka, one of Emet’s educators, shared, “The Shabbaton reminded me why I do what I do. Watching the students light up with inspiration, ask real questions, and connect with each other over Shabbos filled me with gratitude.”
Shabbos afternoon featured a powerful learning session back at the Kigel home. The women heard from Rebbetzin Kigel, who shared relatable insights that spoke directly to the students’ lives and challenges. Rabbi Kigel then addressed the full group, speaking about what a mitzvah brings you in this world – even when the real reward is in the next. His talk sparked deep reflection and meaningful conversation that carried through the rest of the day.
The momentum continued into seudah sh’lishis, where students gathered once more in a relaxed setting to share food, stories, and connection. The Shabbaton concluded with a soulful Havdalah led by Shlomo Mash, bringing the experience to a close with music and unity.
Shabbos in Passaic was a reminder that every individual – regardless of background or Jewish educational level – in the right environment, with the right people, has the ability to connect, be inspired, and grow.
